The great Themis Katrios has passed away.
He was an iconic basketball player of Aris and a great psychiatrist/psychoanalyst of the city.
He had played as a shooting guard and small forward in the Aris Thessaloniki team from 1961 to 1975.
He began his career with the men’s basketball division of Mars in the summer of 1961 and played as a starter since his freshman year.
In 1962-6 he played in the final phase of the Panhellenic championship, helping Aris to take fifth place and win its participation in the first A’ National Championship.
In this event, he emerged as his team’s top scorer, scoring 37 points in Aris’ 80-76 win over Herakles and 24 points in the “yellow” team’s 93-75 loss to Panhellenic.
In 1963-64, Aris finished fifth, with Katrios scoring double figures in 16 of 18 games.
In the following two years, the “yellows” were runners-up in Greece, losing the 1966 title in the last match of the year, where they were defeated away from home by AEK.
Two seasons followed where Anestis Petalidis’ team took third place, as well as two more when they came fourth.
He was a key member of the team until 1972, returning in 1973-74, when Aris, coached by Phaidos Matthaiou, was named the triathlete of Greece.
In Katrios’ last year with the “yellows”, Aris remained on a mediocre course, occupying eighth place in the Panhellenic championship.
Katrios worked as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and was president of the North Hellenic Psychoanalytic Society.
