THE Ukrainian army announced today that it has recaptured a site in the eastern Donetsk region from the Russians, as Moscow holds annexation referendums in parts of Ukraine under its control.

“The Ukrainian army captured Yatskivka,” Oleksiy Gromov, an official of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced on television.

The capture of this site on the eastern bank of the Oskil River appears to confirm the continuation of a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has already allowed Kyiv to recapture several thousand square kilometers in the neighboring Kharkiv region.

“The Ukrainians have also re-established their control over positions south of Bakhmut,” a key city in the Donetsk region that has been the target of weeks of Russian attacks, Gromov said.

Referendums on Russia’s annexation began today in parts of Ukraine controlled in whole or in part by Moscow, referendums branded “rigged” by Kyiv and the West and marking a major escalation in the conflict.
