Calendar Saturday, April 27: The Holy Hieromartyr Simeon became the successor of Saint James the Brother († 62 AD), after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, in the year 70 AD.

According to Hegisippus, he was the son of Clopas, brother of Joseph, and brother of Judas; according to another version, he was the son of Joseph of Mnestorus and brother of Saint James the Elder (see October 23).

While overseeing in Jerusalem, during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98 – 117 AD), he was sent by the heretics to the supreme Atticus for his apostolic zeal. Simeon was accused not by Christian heretics, but by Jews.

The accusation included two strands; one was that he was descended from the line of David and the other that he was a Christian. After being captured, he was severely tortured and then led to death on a cross, in the year 107 AD, at the age of one hundred and twenty.

In the Paris Codices is the Order of Saint Simeon, a poem by the hymn writer Theophanos. (Some Synaxarists unnecessarily repeat his memory on September 18 as well).
