As part of his two-day visit to the island, the Deputy Minister of Culture met with local government, cultural and business entities.

The opening of the newly established Corfu International Festival was announced yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Culture, in charge of contemporary culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakis. A multi-dimensional, multicultural, multi-faceted festival, under the artistic direction of Dionysis Grammenos, which will spread throughout the island of Faia, with the participation of renowned Greek and foreign artists and with the natural background of landmarks and monuments of Corfu.

The Festival is organized by the municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

In the framework of his two-day visit to the island, the deputy minister met with local government bodies, cultural and business bodies. Mr. Giatromanolakis was also the keynote speaker at an event at the Corfu Chamber on “Handicraft and cultural entrepreneurship, possibilities and prospects”, where he presented the opportunities that are opening up for professionals in the cultural, creative and handicraft sector, from the development actions he has planned the YPPOA and have joined the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0.

His visit to the island began with a meeting at the Town Hall with the participation of the mayor of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, Meropis Hydraios, the deputy of Corfu, Stefanos Gikas, and representatives of the cultural and educational institutions of Corfu. “The main axis of the meeting was the management of the rich cultural stock of the island, as well as finding solutions to challenges faced by the cultural institutions of the island” informs the relevant announcement of the Ministry of Culture. In addition, the deputy minister discussed, both with the mayor and the deputy “about the need for a broader cultural planning for the city of Corfu, as well as the possibility of including individual projects in the Recovery Fund, mainly in the fields of strengthening cultural extroversion, entrepreneurship and training”.

N. Giatromanolakis visited, among others, the Museum of Asian Art, the Municipal Gallery, the Reading Society, the Old Fort, the Paleopolis Museum – Mon Repos, as well as creative businesses that are members of the Corfu Creatives network and the Corfu Design Route. In addition, the deputy minister met with the deputy governor of the Ionian Islands, Costas Zorbas, with the artistic director of the DIPETHE of Corfu, Varvara Doukas, while, together with the director of the National Gallery – Alexander Soutsou Museum, Syrago Tsiara performed an autopsy at the Annex of the Gallery in Korakiana, with the perspective of integration and the start of building projects required for the orderly operation of the organization and its essential interconnection with the local community.
