The heavy legacy of the name of the founder of the center-right faction Constantinos Karamanlis, came back into the news today with the statements of his two namesakes, bearers of the family tradition of the Karamanlis. At an extremely important and difficult moment in the country’s history, amid the storm from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, from the global economic and energy crisis and from the growing threats from Turkey, two completely different voices and two completely different opinions were heard, regarding with the course of things.
The environment of the former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, had already prepared us in 2015 for the attitude towards the center-right faction, after he had formed on the side of the Tsipras – Kammenos coalition. Thus the even veiled reports and accusations of anti-democracy and illegality, the comments about morbid imagination and political stupidity, as well as the calls for purification and light, which were heard today in Crete, seem to follow the logic of the continuous undermining of the government of of New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which has been carried out completely consciously for years from the same environment.
The poison of the ex-elects of the former prime minister, which supplies material to SYRIZA’s effort to overthrow the government and devise specific post-election scenarios, gains even greater momentum after the statements of Kostas Karamanlis himself.
In the completely opposite direction, the statements of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Costas Achillea Karamanlis, gave the answer he needed saying that “in matters of Democracy, no faction is more sensitive than the faction that guaranteed Democracy in our homeland in 1974”. He focused on the key problems of the day which are none other than the energy crisis, which is a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the economic difficulties, with inflation at historical highs of the last 10 years. And he emphasized the utmost need for strong and stable states. A need to which the center-right faction of New Democracy responds successfully and adequately.
The current minister realistically set priorities and needs. The former prime minister gave further fuel to the witch hunt. The current minister suggested the importance of governing the country by a strong government with parchments in crisis management and dealing with all kinds of risks. The former prime minister kept alive with his intervention, the opposition’s desire for developments that would put the country on dangerous paths today.
The need for the center-right government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to remain standing today should be a priority for the wider community. Unfortunately, some people dream of a new 2015, new experiments and the fulfillment of all their obsessions. This is something that should not pass.
