Mateus Ponitka (29, 1.98) is now a Panathinaikos player, as the announcement of the Italian Rezzo Emilia was followed by that of the green KAE.

Mateus Ponitka (29, 1.98) joins the dynamic team of Panathinaikos. The news was first announced by Rezzo Emilia, before the announcement of endorsement by the Greens followed. Mateus Ponitka had a contract (2+1 months) with the Italian team, but this did not stop Panathinaikos, who acquired one of their top players EuroBasket 2022 which was completed a few days ago.

With the addition of the former Zenit player to their roster, Panathinaikos added an all-around guard/forward, who mainly competes as a shooting guard and small forward, but at the same time in Poland he practically had the role of point guard.

The relevant announcement states:

“KAE Panathinaikos announces the acquisition of Mateus Ponitkas for one year.

Mateusz Ponitka was born on August 29, 1993 in Ostrów, Poland, he is 1.98m tall. and competes in positions “2” and “3”. He took his first steps in basketball from UKS Kasprowiczanka Ostrow Wielkopolski before moving to AZS Warsaw University of Technology in 2009. In March 2012 he signed for Asseco Prokom and in the summer of 2013 he “moved” to the Belgian Telenet Oostende, winning the championship with them.

In August 2015 he returned to Poland on behalf of Zielona Gora and was named EuroCup Rising Star of the 2015-2016 season. In the summer of 2016 he “moved” to Turkey and Pınar Karşıyaka, while the 2017-18 season found him in the Spanish CB Canarias Tenerife.

After his stint in the Spanish team he was transferred to the Russian Lokomotiv Kuban. After one season there he moved to BC Zenit Saint Petersburg where he remained until 2022. In the summer of 2022 he signed for the Italian Reggio Emilia, from which he left to join Panathinaikos.

In total, he has played five seasons in the Euroleague, three with BC Zenit Saint Petersburg, one with Zielona Gora and one with Asseco Prokom, averaging 8.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

In the Eurocup he played for four seasons, with Telenet Oostende, Zielona Gora and Lokomotiv Kuban averaging 9.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

At EuroBasket 2022, Ponitka led the Polish National Team to a fourth-place finish, averaging 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
