Despina Papamichael withstood the pressure of Garbiñe Mugurutha for one set, in the match of the 2nd round at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The 29-year-old Greek tennis player fought in the opening set of the match, but suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat by the former No1 and current No12 of the world, ending her very good appearance at the WTA 500 in Japan.

The 1st set was particularly competitive, with Papamichail immediately responding to Mugurutha’s quick break before the Spaniard managed another break in the 5th game (3-2). The 28-year-old, born in Venezuela, missed two set point opportunities at 5-3 on Papamichael’s serve and eventually closed out the set on her own serve after 51 competitive minutes.

The second part of the match was more controlled for the Spaniard as she played with more confidence, put more pressure on Papamichael’s serve and started with two straight breaks, maintaining the lead until the end without being particularly threatened.

Wank or one of Rybakina-Samsonova will be Mugurutha’s opponent in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard is ranked 53rd in the WTA Race for the WTA Finals title holder and defender of 1,300 points. He will have to make a very strong finish to qualify for Texas.
