This year, the unique Greek illustration festival returns even bigger, renewed and brighter. Entitled “Beam of Light”, a ray of light, a ten-day event, exhibitions, lectures, workshops and many surprises takes place in the Serafion of the municipality of Athens until September 18.

Anastasia Terzidou and Raphaela Karagianni, co-founders of illustradays, have been active and working for years in the cultural sector and, as they say, have always had a great love for illustration and illustrated books. So having a common vision, they created the first illustration festival in 2021, including movement, exhibitions, speeches, meetings and workshops for young and old. “We wanted this venture to have an evolution.”

The huge impact of last year’s event gave impetus to continue this year, with even greater participation from the world. Inclusivity, creative collaborations, specially designed guided tours as well as the participation of many foreign and Greek artists form an excellent festival for everyone.

These exhibitions introduce you to the idea of illustration and create familiarity and accessibility for everyone, even those who are not involved in this field.

The four main sections of the festival program are: illustrastories, illustralabs, illustratalks and illustraclub. A new action of the festival, speed dating with publishers, meetings of illustrators and publishers, in which they discuss, communicate and network, cultivating the ground for possible collaborations, is noteworthy and promising. Through the upcoming events, the public will have the opportunity to meet over 100 artists, learn more about illustration and take part in the creative process.

Among the most important elements of the festival are its three exhibitions. The first focuses especially on what’s new here in Greece, the second, the international, includes many well-known artists from abroad, who travel every year to different festivals and inspire the audience and other artists.

For the third, which is happening for the first time, the festival addressed fifty Greek illustrators and asked them to choose a book in which they have illustrated and exhibit it together with drafts they made for it. Thus the public will be in contact with the whole process of creating a project, as the founders say.

These exhibitions introduce you to the idea of illustration and create familiarity and accessibility for everyone, even those who are not involved in this field.

It is noteworthy that the exhibitions are accessible to visually impaired people. The curatorial texts of the exhibitions are available in Braille, while specially designed guided tours take place every day at specific times.

The festival is beautifully framed by the parties held in shops in Athens, where everyone can attend and while drinking a drink relax and get to know each other, exchanging opinions and artistic concerns.
