A German surfer broke his own record by surfing the biggest wave in history – claiming the wall of water was 28.5m.

Sebastian Steudtner tried his hand at the infamous Nazaré in Portugal earlier this year.

The 38-year-old currently holds the Guinness World Record for a wave in 2020, also in Nazaré, which stood at 26 meters.

While big wave surfing record attempts have historically been measured by analyzing footage and images, innovative drone technology was used in Steudtner’s latest venture. ‘Mission Wave Alpha’ has seen him train for the perfect wave for years and the extreme athlete decided the time was right to surf the biggest waves of his life when Nazaré saw ‘historic’ conditions in February.

Steudtner chose February 24 because it was “the biggest storm and the biggest waves in the last three or four years.” “We were, for the first time, surfing the biggest waves in windy conditions that were considered unvisitable,” he said. The waves at Nazareth can reach the height of a ten-story building and are formed due to an underwater canyon off the coast, which is three miles deep.
