Disappointed and angry, the mother of Iasona Lalaounis appeared with the court’s decision that imposed a 3-year suspended prison sentence on the police officer, driver of an official parliamentary car, who was found guilty of the crime of manslaughter for the traffic accident outside the Parliament on March 12 2021, with the 23-year-old victim.
In her statements to journalists, she emphasized: “This is how Greek justice works. There is no. They didn’t even take away the license, as an example, to show drivers that someone is punished when they drive illegally. Traffic accidents will never end the way we are going, nobody gets punished. I am so angry, disappointed. Of course, I didn’t expect anything from the Greek judiciary, but I wanted to believe that something would change, at the last moment, that they would at least take away his diploma. That you can continue to drive normally when you have killed someone on my road is unthinkable,” he says.
The court adopted the proposal of the prosecutor of Edra, who requested the guilt of the police officer for the death of the 23-year-old motorcyclist, characterizing the policeman’s negligence as “serious and cumulative”. As stated by the prosecutor, the accused “followed the dangerous practice” and turned left on N. Sofias to enter the courtyard of the Parliament, despite the sign, marked on the road, for the forced straight passage of vehicles, blocking the road along the way of the 23-year-old.
The judges denied the accused the recognition of the mitigating factor of the previous legal life that he requested through his lawyer because, as stated by the defense, he has never been involved with the authorities and has a clean criminal record.
The prosecutor also submitted a similar proposal rejecting the mitigating factor, who stated that the accused did not demonstrate legal behavior in violation of the Code of Criminal Procedure. “The behavior he displayed during the traffic accident was not an inconsistency,” the public prosecutor emphasized.
