“The plan was to attack”

What emerges from the witnesses of the episode that led to the death of Giorgos Lyggeridis is revealing.

More specifically, one of the three witnessesafter describing what happened at the stadium, is reported to have said “the match started around 9. From the moment I went to the stadium I knew there was going to be trouble as there were a lot more people in the stadium than usual and almost everyone was wearing black clothes…

It sounded like the plan was to make the attack at the expense of the matajids at the specific stadium and not at S.E.F or “Karaiskaki” because these stadiums have cameras while Melina Merkouri does not, so it would be particularly difficult for the authorities to identify them. While at first it sounded like there would be a police raid after the match ended, at the end of the first set we heard orders to get out. Almost 100-150 people came out, mostly kids. After the items were distributed we were instructed to go to where the matazis were and attack them. We were told that they would be the “frontrunners” and we would follow them. According to the order, when he (name mentioned) would throw the molotov he was holding, we would continue with the objects we had… The attacks lasted about 10-15 minutes and as soon as our (names) second platoon came from Kifissos he ordered us to go back to the stadium and we ran, we entered the stadium so as not to be arrested”.

A second witness then reportedly testified that “at the end of the first set I saw a crowd on the court and I saw people wearing helmets, masks, full faces and knuckleball gloves. There were about 80 people and some came out from the left and others from the right.

While everyone was getting dressed I saw a man dressed in black with covered features talking on his cell phone and shouting “let’s go”. I left 5-10 minutes after the group of people with covered features left. I saw objects being thrown at the police.”
