Battery energy storage units of the order of 1,500 GW will be needed by the planet by 2030 in order to achieve the energy and climate goals set by the COP28 climate conference. This is six times the power compared to today.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), these goals are tripling renewable energy sources, doubling the rate of energy efficiency and transitioning away from fossil fuels.

As the organization warns, if all these batteries are not installed, then it will not be possible to reach the desired degree of transition to keep the average global temperature at the levels needed.

Remarkably, the cost of batteries has fallen by 90% in the last 15 years. However, more decline is needed going forward, the IEA estimates.

Regarding the investments in their production, it is estimated that if all the existing plans are implemented in the US and the EU, then it will be enough to cover their needs with a horizon of 2030, thus limiting the need for imports from China .

What is true in Greece?

In the last year, Greece already proceeded with the first two auctions for battery storage units, which were successfully completed. Together with the third tender that will take place within the next months, a total of 1,000 MW will have been offered so that our country can obtain a necessary management solution for the green energy produced by RES.

The first battery projects are already being implemented gradually and will be operational within the next two years. The ultimate goal is to put 3.1 gigawatts of this kind into operation by 2030.

Beyond stand-alone batteries, the addition of batteries to RES projects, such as wind and photovoltaic, is also progressing rapidly.
