The Municipality and the Mayor of Agia, Mr. Antonis Goundaras, express their support for the large agricultural rally organized by the farmers of Agia today, at 11 am on Friday, by taking the decision to remain closed services in support of the struggle of the farmers of the region. Specifically and according to the relevant announcement:
On Friday, April 26, 2024, the farmers of the Municipality of Agia, having reached the limits of despair, take to the streets once more to claim their just demands, which are the compensation of their products (apples, chestnuts), from the catastrophic flood “Daniel”, as very correctly it was done with their colleagues in Magnesia.
As an agricultural area par excellence, we consider that as a minimal sign of support and solidarity in their fair struggle, we owe it to the services of our Municipality headquarters to remain closed and to operate only with security personnel during the hours of the farmers’ mobilization, specifically from 11 a.m. until the end of the employees’ working hours. We ask the workers to attend the protest and support the fair demands of the farmers.
Additionally, in the context of solidarity with the struggling farmers of our region and as an act of respect for the agricultural history of this place, and its people, during the awarding ceremony of the event with the name “6th KISSAVOS MARATHON RACE” EVANGELOS AD 120 /2024 Page 1 KOUMBAROS”, which will take place on Sunday, April 28, 2024, the medals to the winners of the race will be awarded by representatives of the agricultural associations and cooperatives and farmers of our region, and not by the Mayor, Deputy Mayors and municipal councilors, as was done in the previous games. This decision is exclusively binding on the Municipal Authority.
With this symbolic move, we want to make all citizens aware of the big problem facing apple growing in our region and send a message to the Government to immediately give the compensations if we really want to have more years with events that honor and support the apple of Agia.
