There are ten homeless people who are hosted today in the Guest House of the Municipality of Volos

There are ten homeless people who are currently being accommodated at the Volos Municipality Hostel, as was reported in a conference held at the Volos City Hall, as many of them have reintegrated into society and returned to their environment in the previous state before entering the structure. However, there is also a percentage of homeless people who remain on the street, even though they have been approached by social workers, either because they do not accept to enter the program, or because they face health and addiction problems and are left out, or because they choose to remain outside the structure from point of view.

Maria Apostolidis, clinical psychologist and scientific manager at the Homeless Hostel and responsible for the action within the NSRF, emphasized that the structure has been in a funded program since October 2019, while since 2012 it has been operating with its own resources from the KEKPA and in total they have gone through the Guest House over 85 people, mostly men.
Of the ten people who are accommodated at the Homeless Hostel today, seven are men and three are women, all of them lonely.

“A large percentage of our success, which is reflected in the fact that there are not many people on the street, is because there are great efforts to reintegrate, which is not exclusively work-related, but people who have managed with the help of staff to get benefits, people who have been reunited with the families and others who were professionally rehabilitated,” the psychologist pointed out.
Mrs. Apostolidis stated that the causes that sometimes lead people to become homeless are bad family relationships, substances, misfortune and the financial crisis of 2010 and added that the rate of reintegration of homeless people exceeds 70%.
Regarding the profile of the people accommodated in the hostel, they are in the average age of 45-55 years old, people who found themselves unemployed after the crisis of 2010, some failed to fulfill the expectations of their families and very bad family relationships led to the breakdown of relationships and they found themselves on the road, because there was no other environment to help them.

The average time of homelessness is about 6 months, for someone to turn to the Hostel, an effort is being made to reduce this time in cooperation with the Bar Association, for cases of evictions, before they find themselves on the street, while there are people on the street who do not meet the conditions to someone enters the hostel, which is to be clean of substances, not to be addicted, who are still sleeping on benches, abandoned houses, around the Aquarium or Liberty Square, in places that are as close as possible to the center , so that they are protected, the psychologist pointed out. When it comes to feeding them, many turn to the Church and people who want to help them.
Regarding the cooperation with the Bar Association, Mrs. Apostolidis said that in two cases evictions were stopped for two families with two and three children respectively.

The deputy mayor of Social Care, Solidarity – Equality and Management of Social Centers, Paraskevi Anagnostou, emphasized that the role of the Homeless Hostel is supportive, because it could not be a homeless person on the street, who would like to be helped and to be in a roof.

However, to enter the protected area, his behavior and health must be in accordance with the standards of the structure, he must not have communicable diseases, he must be mentally balanced and able to coexist in the structure.
