--

Today is the official first for the festive Easter opening hours in the shops of Thessaloniki, which will last until April 7.

The Thessaloniki market is moving at an Easter pace, with the countdown to Holy Week having already begun.

Godparents and parents – and not only – throw themselves into the “battle” of the candle and the chocolate egg, with the market having a multitude of options, such as that of the most elaborate egg.

Already in the city’s central patisseries, “special” eggs occupy a place in the windows, winning the admiration of young and old.

Roosters, unicorns, eggs decorated with truffles and chocolates in elaborate designs, strawberries, ducklings with small eggs, aspire to win not only the eyes, but also to satisfy even the most refined palates, with their prices starting from 6 and “reaching” 35 euros depending on their size.

For their part, shopkeepers speak of sluggish consumer traffic, hoping that the extended opening hours that come into effect, as well as the open market on Palm Sunday, will attract the buying public.

The schedule

According to the city’s Trade Association (ESTH), the shops today, Thursday, will operate continuously, from 10 am to 9 pm, while on Saturday the 27th of the month they will remain open from 10 am to 6 pm afternoon.

On Palm Sunday April 28, shops will open at 11am and stay open until 6pm.

However, from Maundy Monday 29 April to Maundy Thursday 2 May, shops will be open from 10am to 9pm, while on Good Friday they will open at 1pm and close at 7pm. On Holy Saturday they will be open from 10 am to 4 pm.

As noted, the shops are going to remain closed on Easter Sunday, Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 May, following a decision by the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Domnas Michailidou.

It is recalled that the mandatory holiday of May 1, 2024 was postponed to Tuesday, May 7, 2024, due to the fact that it coincides with Holy Wednesday.
