“The Byzantine Resurrection”: Issues of paleologian iconography

The book “The Byzantine Resurrection” is published by “ENNOIA” publications and mainly describes issues of paleologian iconography. (See contents HERE)

The Resurrection of Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. This is clearly formulated by the apostle Paul: “EἰὲCHRISTὸςοὐκἐγηγερται, vain faith” (1 Cor. 15, 17).

This fundamental teaching of the Church about life and death, heaven and Hades, light and darkness, the fall and regeneration, sin and salvation, the gloom of death and the joy of life, was attempted by the Byzantine art to express with the performance of Es Ados Kathodu. The Byzantine artist consciously calls this image H ANACTACIC and the believer who worships it feels that the Resurrection of Christ is also his own resurrection.

From the time of its creation – probably at the beginning of the seventh century – it was told on the walls and shrines of churches, adorned illustrated manuscripts and other works of art. Like everything pictorial subjects, it followed an evolutionary course, without altering its theological content. On the contrary, it was made clearer and more understandable by the believers. Paleologian art offered a lot in this direction. Multi-faceted, narrative and inventive scenes combine the doctrinal teaching, worship and hymnology of the Church with the lyricism and humanism of Paleologian society.
