Today, the proposal for a law ending anonymity in the use of prepaid mobile telephony cards, known as so easy, is being brought before the Plenary Session of the Parliament.

Both the Legal Service and the Police, as well as KYP, agree with the proposed law, while mobile phone companies are concerned about the cost of keeping all this data.
The Parliament seems, however, to be oriented towards passing the law proposal, however everything will be decided during today’s debate in the Plenary. This issue dates back to 2009 after a law proposal by former MPs Angelos Votsis and Giorgos Prokopiou. After ten years of discussion, the issue entered the Greek calendar and was recently brought back by the president of the Transport Committee, Marino Musioutta.
The purpose of the proposed law is to establish a legislative framework to identify the owners and users of prepaid airtime mobile telephony services for the purposes of safeguarding security and protecting public order and citizens in general from the commission of offences.
Today, anyone can obtain and use these cards anonymously, which is a significant obstacle to the investigation of many serious crimes by law enforcement authorities. All those involved in the prosecution of crime agree with the proposed law as they believe it will make a significant contribution to the efforts of investigative authorities to investigate serious crimes.
From their side mobile phone service providers, during the discussion of the law proposal in the relevant committee in the Parliament, expressed their opposition, since as they noted, the collection and storage of the huge amount of data that will result from the change will have a financial cost and that at the same time it will cause a problem with the tourists who arrive in Cyprus and will not have easy access to the mobile telephony of Cyprus.
However, it remains unknown who will record the details of the so easy cardholders, whether they will continue to be available from kiosks and supermarkets, or only from mobile operators.
In addition, the companies asked for enough time as a transition period, should the legislation be passed, to be able to comply.
