1719 Robinson Crusoe gets “flesh and bones” through the pen of Daniel Defoe.


1792 The first guillotine execution takes place.
1850 Paul Julius von Reuter, founder of the Reuters news agency, uses 40 pigeons to convey the closing prices of the stock market to his clients.

1901 New York becomes the first state to legislate license plates on cars.
1915 New Zealand and Australian forces attempt to land on the Turkish shores of Gallipoli, in the context of the First World War. About 7,000 Australians and 2,000 New Zealanders were killed during the eight-month conflict.

1942 In the worst mine tragedy, 1,549 workers are killed in an explosion in Manchuria, China.
1944 1st Round of secret elections in occupied Greece for the nomination of electors to the National Council (PEEA).
[1945 Liberation Day (Italy): The Nazi occupation army surrenders and leaves northern Italy. The Italian Social Democracy dissolves and Benito Mussolini is arrested after an escape attempt. This day was designated as a public holiday to celebrate the liberation of Italy.
1953 Scientists Francis Crick and James Watson publish their groundbreaking work on the chemical structure of DNA. For their discovery, which was characterized as the greatest of the 20th century, they will be honored with the Nobel Prize in 1962.

1974 Carnation Revolution: A leftist military coup in Portugal overthrows the authoritarian conservative New State regime and installs a democratic government. It went down in history as the “Revolution of the Carnations” (“Revolucao dos Cravos” in Portuguese), because many government soldiers had placed carnations in the barrels of their guns, at the instigation of the rebellious inhabitants.

1993 Boris Yeltsin is elected President of Russia.
1994 Politician and Minister of National Economy Giorgios Gennimatas dies after a three-year battle with cancer. Giorgos Gennimatas was a Greek politician, founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), MP and minister of the post-political period under the governments of Andreas Papandreou.
2005 Bulgaria and Romania sign the association treaty with the European Union.
