After rumors surfaced that Tesla was abandoning plans to launch a low-cost model to focus on producing a robotic taxi, the company dropped the price of its Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles by $2,000 in the United States and is removing the referral program.

Electrek reports that the price change brings the Model Y to its lowest price yet, after taking into account federal tax incentives for electric cars now available from dealerships. The base version of the vehicle now starts at $42,990 in the US. Tesla offered a similar discount in February, but that offer only lasted until the end of the first quarter.

The Model Y is now sold cheaper in Greece as well, where it starts at €44,990. The Tesla vehicle arrived in our country in December 2022 with a price of €53,990, while last summer it cost €47,240.

The price drop also marks the lowest price ever for the Model X, bringing it to $70,490 upfront with the EV tax credit for those below the income threshold.

Meanwhile, Tesla is ending its current referral program as of April 30. As Tesla explains, “you can earn referral credits by having friends or family use your referral link when they order their first Tesla product or take their first referred demo drive.”

However, the option may return in the future. When asked at X if this means existing credits will expire at the end of April, X owner Elon Musk replied: “No, it’s just that the new credits won’t be earned until we launch a future referral program, which is a few months away. “.

This comes after one difficult quarter for Tesla. It produced 433,371 vehicles and delivered 386,810 globally in the first quarter, an 8.5% drop from the first quarter of 2023. It was the first time the EV maker reported a year-over-year decline in quarterly deliveries since 2020.

On Friday, Tesla also announced a recall for its new Cybertruck due to concerns about the vehicle’s accelerator pedal. The pedal cover can reportedly slip and become wedged under its inner lining, making it difficult to stop or control the vehicle.
