--

A major operation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in Sports Venues is being carried out today from dawn, with the aim of arresting people involved in the case of the murder of police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis on December 7, 2023 in Rentis.

So far, more than 60 people have been arrested, who are accused, among other things, of participating in a criminal organization, while the case file that has been filed includes 165 people.

Among those arrested is the 16-year-old brother of the 18-year-old who admitted to throwing the flare, as well as a 26-year-old manager of a Greek trapper.

At the same time, in the context of the operation, a large number of searches have been carried out in houses and vehicles, from which various items of evidence have been seized.

ELAS’s update on the company:

“A large-scale operation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in the sports grounds of the Attica Security Directorate has been in full progress since the early hours of this morning to arrest people involved in the incident of the fatal injury of a police officer on 7/12/2023 at a sports event in Renti. So far, dozens of people have been brought in as well as a large number of searches in homes and vehicles, while various items of evidence have been seized.”

Giorgos Lyggeridis had been assassinated with a naval flare outside the closed stadium of Rentis “Melina Merkouris”. After 20 days, where he was fighting, he ended up in the ICU of the General State of Nice. It is recalled that an 18-year-old man has been remanded in custody for the murderous attack on Rentis.

The government representative also mentioned the police operation Pavlos Marinakis during the briefing, answering a journalist’s question.

“The murder of the police officer in Rentis was the final straw for society’s anger. It wasn’t the first murder. A violence that started from the stadiums, we reached the point of hearing of human lives being taken away”.

“I had spoken, then, after the murder of the policeman, about the responsibility of the state and we set immediate measures, at a cost to the thousands of fans who love their team. What we said we did, with the cameras, with the tickets, everything, so that we see football in good conditions, like in Europe and automatic penalties are imposed on those who do not follow the rules. As for the criminal aspect of the murder, it is not the government’s job to comment on it. I have received many questions. The answer is: let’s trust the Police and Justice. Such investigations may take time. Many in both the Police and the Judiciary work on many cases. I don’t know the details, it’s not the government’s business. I imagine relevant announcements will be made by EL.AS”.
