Huge rise! Lamb prices this year at Easter

--

Where is the price of lamb at the moment – How much will we buy this Holy Week in Varvakeio, supermarkets and butchers

Producers from Tyrnavos and Serres spoke on Monday morning about lamb prices, stressing that the ministry’s announcements about prices below 10 euros will not be confirmed.

Although indeed last year the lamb was sold without the head for ten euros, this year this scenario seems unlikely.

More specifically, at the moment the little lambs are leaving the slaughterhouse at 7.5 – 8.5 euros per kilo. If we add the cost of the slaughterhouse (50 cents), transport (20 cents), the profit cap and VAT, the price reaches and exceeds 10 euros.

It is noted that in the supermarket we can now find lamb at 11.89 per kilo, while traditionally prices are cheaper in Varvakeio and more expensive in butchers. As long as the lambs are finished, only the lambs over 16 kg will remain, which will be sold at 16 euros per kg.

Speaking at Open, A. Bairaktaris, president of the Tyrnavos livestock association, argued that the most critical element is the price at which the meat will reach the consumer. As he pointed out, during the pandemic he himself sold at the humiliating price of 2.89 euros per kilo, but the lamb again reached the consumer at 15 euros.

For her part, Elpida Sotiropoulou, president of Serre breeders, emphasized that if you find lamb under 10 euros per kilo, it cannot be Greek. At the same time, her own opinion is that the consumer would be better off not preferring it.

As he mentioned, in fact, the prices in Serres have already exceeded 13 euros per kilo, while it is possible that they will reach 15-16 euros per kilo.
