An ELAS operation has been ongoing since Monday morning for the murderous attack on the MAT police officer, Giorgos Lyggeridis, with a naval flare during the incidents in Rentis, in December 2023.
According to information, there have been dozens of arrests and arrests of organized fans both in Athens and in the countryside.
However, according to the report of the iEidiseis court reporter, Mairis Benea, the arrested will be brought before the prosecutor to be charged, while the Athens Prosecutor’s Office will be in charge and not the Piraeus Prosecutor’s Office, to avoid incidents and because there are more police officers in Athens forces.

It is recalled that a few days ago, the police editor of iEidiseis, Alexandros Kalafatis, wrote in his report that the investigation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in Sports Venues into the case of the murder of the 31-year-old outside a field where a volleyball match was being held in Rentis continues under strict secrecy.
Katehaki Avenue sources who had spoken about the matter to iEidiseis note that “the case file is not only open and not closed, but we can say that the preliminary investigation is in full progress. In fact, it is estimated that the result of the investigation will be appropriate and proportional to the seriousness of the case. From the first moment it was said that it is a duty of honor for the Police to find the culprits. The fact that in the last months not the slightest thing was published about the development of the investigation and the case in general, it only did good to the preliminary investigation. Evidence is gathered under the utmost secrecy. The investigation is complex, it requires time and special attention in relation to how the accusations can be linked.”
As officials of the Ministry of Citizen Protection say, it is an investigation for which, from the first moment, an order has been given not to run out on natural perpetrators. iEidiseis had written months ago that at least 50 people are joining the cast. Emphasis was placed on the identification of elements both by technical means and through witness statements, as well as the utilization of sources available to the EL.AS services. Among other things, information about preparatory actions for the attack on the MAT platoon was put under the microscope.
Until today, only one 18-year-old man had been arrested for the murder, who was alleged to be the person who fired the naval flare at 31-year-old Giorgos Lyggeridis on the evening of December 7, 2023 in Rentis. He was initially charged with attempted murder (because the policeman was hospitalized in the ICU) and then the charge was changed to manslaughter (because the policeman lost his battle for life at the General State Hospital of Nice).
