The battle to contain the price of arrowroot is causing a headache for the Ministry of Development. In the neighborhood butchers, however, lamb and goat even reach 17 euros per kilo.

From today, Monday, April 22, the “Godparents’ Basket” with toys for children comes into effect, while on Wednesday, April 24, the “Easter Basket” with lamb, goat, bun and Easter chocolate eggs will follow.

In the “godparents’ basket” includes toy candles and chocolate eggs, as well as all the toy categories that were included in Santa’s basket, such as: board and puzzles, dolls and pretend toys, baby toys, action figures, construction toys, toy cars and remote control, electronic and sports toys, stuffed animals and musical toys.

The “Easter Basket” will be available in supermarkets from April 24 until Holy Saturday and will contain lamb, goat, bun and chocolate eggs.

On the other hand, the battle to contain the price of arrowroot is causing a headache for the Ministry of Development. In the neighborhood butchers, however, lamb and goat even reach 17 euros per kilo, while the goal was to maintain the price at last year’s levels, at 10 euros per kilo. “In the regional butchers, if I get last year’s figures it sold 14 and 15, this year it will go 16 and 17. It is unfair that the breeder sells 6 and the butcher goes 16” he said about the president of the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos, Dimitris Kapounis.

Livestock breeders are reacting to the government’s decision to include lamb and goat in the “Easter Basket” again this year, recalling that last year after the relevant announcement, prices had plummeted. Selling prices ahead of Easter will be determined in the middle of next week, however they emphasize that by selling 8 euros per kilo the producer simply “breaks even”. At the same time, they warn of increases in meat prices in the next period due to the decrease in the animal population.

According to Dimitris Moschos, breeder and vice-president of the Hellenic Livestock Association (SEK), “we cannot determine how the market will move and what prices will reach the final consumer. What we can determine though is our own production cost. In order to withstand the situation that has been created in recent years, we want to get at least close to 8 euros per kilo of meat”. He noted that the prices fluctuated somewhere in the previous period, that is, from 7.5-8 euros. The breeders note that what they see is that the same prices prevail for the lambs that will come to Greece from outside the borders. Based on these data, the prices that the final consumers will see to be real should be from 12-14 euros per kilo, depending on the quality of the lamb”.

Commenting on statements by the leadership of the Ministry of Development for a purchase close to 10 euros per kilo, he states that this does not “work out” and denounces the ministry for discrediting the sector’s bodies. “He does not sit down with us to discuss either the cost of production or what is being done in livestock farming and the result is to see the shrinkage in the livestock sectors I mentioned above. The consumer will see it immediately with a price increase in the next period”, says Mr. Moschos, estimating that beef will also rise to the heights in the next period, while the same will begin to happen with sheep and goats as the population is decreasing of the livestock and it is even estimated that in the next period this will continue with geometric progress and very suddenly several herds will “leave” from production”.
