“New Left is the space that expresses the leftist, center-left, progressive citizens today”, says Alexis Haritsis in an interview with “Kathimerini” on Sunday.
To the question why someone who wants to disapprove the government should not vote for the second or the third party but for the New Left, he answers: “because the political content of the disapproval is also important. How much do you disapprove of the ND when you support a party that opposes it by copying it or converging with her at key points?”.
He states that the New Left’s priorities are clear and that they are accompanied by “serious, reliable and socially grounded persons”, such as the people who make up its European ballot paper. He states that the qualitative objective in the European elections is “for the New Left to have a decisive role in the rearrangement of the political forces in the space of the left” and, quantitatively, “to convince as many as we can of all those who declare that they could vote for us or that they are interested for our venture”.
Mr. Haritsis maintains that the course of “Mr. Kasselakis’s party” confirms every day that the decision to leave was forced and that the current one “is not the SYRIZA which inspired and which the citizens trusted for the governance of the country”. He argues that even people who stay for emotional or tactical reasons “suffocate with the leadership’s authoritarianism and the normalization of country-religion-family that the leadership attempts.”
On the question of whether the “Tsipras” brand has a future, Mr. Haritsis notes, among other things, that “Alexis Tsipras is not a random politician with an expiration date…” and that, however, he cannot answer whether the former prime minister will choose to play a central political role again. “Currently, I disagree with his assessment that today’s SYRIZA can change for the better. The bet with this political leadership is lost. The degenerative mutation of a space cannot be done with our tolerance or in our name.” supports.
As for whether it is possible to open a discussion of cooperation between the progressive forces after the election, he replies that the New Left believes in open programmatic dialogue, but “we estimate that the leaderships of SYRIZA and PASOK are on the one hand consensual on the central choices of the New Democracy, on the other hand they are phobic about perspective of the substantive programmatic discussion”. “And for this”, he adds, “we call on the existing living forces that are suffocating with their politics, to break free from the balance of terror and contribute to the reconstruction of the political map of the country”. He emphasizes that this, however, presupposes a discussion on specific questions about the necessary policies.
