An image of Adidas’ 2022 World Cup balls being charged before a match has ‘confused’ football fans.

The well-known sports goods company has once again taken on the creation of the balls for the Qatar tournament, which bears the name “Al Rihla”, which translates to “the journey” in Arabic.

However, there is a significant difference in terms of specifications compared to the older ones, as the 2022 balls have been equipped with completely game-changing 500Hz motion sensors.

They track the position, strike and movement of every kick and header on the pitch at 500 frames per second.

Sensors are also crucial to the implementation of the new semi-automatic offsides.

But the new technology means the balls must be fully charged to work properly. An image showing four balls being plugged into a power outlet, the same way one charges their cell phone, has gone viral. The sensor’s battery weighs 14 grams and can last up to six hours.

How the 2022 World Cup ball decided whether Cristiano Ronaldo touched the ball or not

Her technology was needed on Monday when she confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo did not head the ball after Bruno Fernandes’ cross in Portugal’s match against Uruguay.

Ronaldo claimed he scored, meaning he would equal Eusebio’s tally of nine World Cup goals. But even from the slow-motion replays, it was hard to tell if CR7 had actually made contact with the ball.

However, Adidas, with their high-tech balls, were able to prove that it was in fact a Fernandes goal.

In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in Adidas’ official Al Rihla match ball, we are able to definitively say that there was no contact with the ball by Cristiano Ronaldo for the first goal of the game.

»No external force could be measured on the ball, as shown by the lack of “heartbeat” in our measurements and graph.

The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be extremely accurate in our analysis“, the company’s announcement said.
