The Cavaliers pulled off the ultimate surprise after catching everyone in the NBA asleep and acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz for Markkanen and Sexton, among others
The Knicks have been courting Donovan Mitchell for months. However, the Cavaliers were the ones who finally acquired him, after in a surprise move they agreed with the Jazz for the exchange of the All Star guard!
As ESPN revealed, the Cavs will send Lauri Markkanen, Colin Sexton, Ochal Agbaji and three future first-round draft picks to Utah, while giving Utah the right to trade picks in the offseason. In order to complete the deal, Sexton will sign a four-year early contract extension for $72 million.
It is recalled that New York has long been in discussions with the Jazz. But the two sides never found common ground, with the Knicks’ decision to offer an early four-year extension in lieu of $100 million to RJ Barrett – whom the Jazz wanted – “killing” the talks.
With this move, in theory at least, all sides are satisfied. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, added an All Star to their roster without losing the three players they wanted to keep (Garland, Mobley and Allen). The Jazz, for their part, acquired three young players (Markkanen, Sexton, Agbaji), but also the draft picks they so desired and can tank with… comfort.
