Last Wednesday, within three to four hours, the cesspool of social media tried and condemned Fotis Ioannidis. The cannibalism recital had started several days ago from fake profiles that implied that the Greek international forward was competing under doping. The posts-venom against the 24-year-old ace took the form of a culvert when the information was published in a football-news blog that “the first sample of a Greek international footballer who participated in the national team’s mission in Tbilisi is positive”. This particular piece of information was butter to the bread of the “sick” fans who like coffee shop conversations. With their posts they targeted, without anything tangible, a player from the top shelf of Greek football, taking for granted that the doped international was Ioannidis. On social media, hundreds of arlumpas paraded, as it turned out. Ioannidis had given two samples. The first was taken in Athens before the match against Kazakhstan and the second in Tbilisi – both were negative. The young striker was put up against the wall for execution on the charge of being “dirty” from dope, but within a few hours the whole story was proven to be fake. And when the alarm ended with an official update from EPO and EOCAN on the matter, it was Ioannidis’ turn to speak: “Regarding some non-existent and false scenarios that have been circulating on the internet in the last few hours, I am very sorry, but we should to turn to justice against those who tried to sully my name”. The operation to smear the name of Ioannidis has fallen on the cliff, however the problem is that they have not yet found a way to “dirty” the social media when it functions as a cesspool. And this should be the demand for all those involved in sports: to neutralize or even limit the toxicity and stench of the internet before it becomes a cancer in the healthy cells of Greek football.
