Jurgen Klopp apologized to Liverpool fans after their derby defeat to Everton, admitting his side need to upset Arsenal and Manchester City to have any title hopes.
Everton were the big winners in the Merseyside derby after beating Liverpool 2-0 to leapfrog them into the Premier League while ending the Reds’ title hopes.
Jurgen Klopp wanted to apologize after the defeat at the club world, he explained that his side did not approach the match properly and now needs the upsets of Arsenal and Manchester City to have any hopes of the title race.
“I really feel for the world. I’m sorry about that. I have been told so often what a great record we have in the derby. We had never lost here before and now it feels very different. I really apologize for that. It was unnecessary, but it happened.
I am very disappointed. We let the game play out as Everton wanted. They scored two goals from set pieces.
Every phase we lost gave Everton even more momentum. We never found it and that didn’t help.”
Asked about the title race, Klopp added: “I understand, but you can all see the board. Shall I say now that we’re still in?”
We need a mistake from City and Arsenal and we need to win games. If they start losing all their games and we do what we did tonight, nothing will change and we are not even safe for the Champions League.
We should play better football. You see we are hurrying towards the goal. You can’t act like you’ve scored 15 goals in the last two games. You have to fight through these times.
People ask me about mindset, but it has different aspects. It’s not an attitude problem or if the kids want it. No one does this on purpose. It’s my job to get them in a situation where they feel confident to do it.
This is the most difficult part of football. I am responsible. So far it hasn’t worked. We have to keep trying.
We have to recover. It will be a challenge both mentally and physically. West Ham are probably waiting and rubbing their hands and hoping we go there with one leg, but I’ll do everything to make sure we’re a lot more ourselves there.
I’d rather be sitting here winning 4-0 and flying. The job is to win matches and the more you win the more successful you are and at the moment we haven’t won enough to achieve anything yet this season. We better start winning.”
