Strong earthquake 5.2 points of the Richter scale occurred on Saturday morning (07:13) off Crete.
According to the first assessment of the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake was centered on 30 kilometers south southeast of Zakros.
At the same time, it had a focal depth of 4.7 kilometers.
The earthquake was reportedly felt on the island, especially in the east, but there have been no reports of damage or injuries so far.
Lekkas: “There is no reason to worry”
However, its president was reassuring OASP Efthymios Lekkas, who emphasized that the earthquake is not a cause for concern.
Professor eexplained that the tremor was in a marine environment quite far from Ierapetra and there is no cause for concern.
“Essentially, one can say that it is an aftershock of the big earthquake that happened months ago in south-eastern Crete again in the same area”, Mr. Lekkas emphasized to SKAI.
“Dance” of aftershocks off Crete
Two aftershocks followed at 8:09 and 8:28 a.m., measuring 3.5 and 4 on the Richter Scale respectively.
The first was centered on 29 kilometers southeast of Zakros, while the second one 114 km southeast of Kasos.
