Pep Guardiola insisted after the emphatic 4-0 win at home to Brighton that Manchester City had taken a major step towards the title, while refusing to write Liverpool off the title race.

Manchester City completed their 30-match unbeaten run in all competitions (24 wins – 6 draws) on Thursday and did so in the most impressive fashion, after trampling Brighton 4-0 away to move within a point of leaders Arsenal with matches less (they are already at +2 from Liverpool).

The citizens were even dominant at the Amex with Phil Foden as the main protagonist (MVP of the match with two goals), with Pep Guardiola not hiding his satisfaction with the presence of his team but also keeping everyone grounded in view of the last five games .

“The title race is not just between Manchester City and Arsenal. What happened to Liverpool, two defeats in a row, can happen to Arsenal, it can happen to us. The important thing is that we are still in the race.

The fact that we have succeeded in the past does not necessarily mean that we will do so in the future. With five games left, we know the margins are very tight. We have to win all the matches.

With every game we give, we get closer to our goal.” clarified the Catalan, when asked if Foden is a candidate for the league’s top player, he said meaningfully:

“For sure, but he wants to win the Premier League. His impact in the final third against Brighton was better than in the last two or three games. He was calmer tonight. He made the right decisions and it’s always good when he scores “
