With a 7.2 Richter earthquake, tsunami and collapses, the “Minoas 2024” exercise continues in Heraklion and Lasithi – 150,000 people participate

In the sea area north of Heraklion it takes place 7.2 magnitude earthquake which causes a small tsunami in the area from Linoperamata to Sissi Lasithiou. This is of course the scenario of the great exercise “Minoas 2024”, which is currently taking place in Heraklion and Lasithi.

Approximately 150,000 people take part in the exercise and it is being held for the first time in Crete on such a large scale, while, as stated by the president of the OASP, Mr. Euthymios Lekkas, “every year a similar exercise will take place in a different region in Greece”.

According to the script message 112 will be sent after 10 am approximately, as the earthquake causes cracks in the crown of the Aposelemi dam, major damage, collapses, tsunami waves, entrapment in archaeological sites, landslides, a large number of a total of 75 episodes, which are absolutely “realistic”.

The exercise includes evacuation in 250 schools with over 30,000 students, evacuation in public and municipal buildings (Archaeological Museum, prisons, hospitals, port, damage to more than 70 buildings in the old city, “N. Kazantzakis” airport), private businesses, police services, etc.

Lekkas: The exercise does not aim to succeed – To find the weaknesses and correct them

“The response was satisfactory. I will not personally say that the exercise was successful. Exercise does not aim to succeed. Such a large exercise aims to point out the problems and weaknesses we have so that we can correct them. Therefore, there is no such thing as a successful exercise. The organization of the exercise, which was difficult, is extremely efficient and enables us to control all the procedures and responses”, said Mr. Lekkas in his statements.

Referring to the criteria according to which Crete was chosen to start such a large-scale exercise for the first time, the professor said: “Crete is of particular interest in terms of the environment that is unique at the boundaries of the two seismic plates, Europe and of Africa, and in this environment also developed our civilization which was created solely by earthquakes”.
