The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou makes an official visit to Uruguay until April 23 and in Chile from April 24 to 26, at the invitation of their Presidents Luis Lacalle Pou and Gabriel Boric respectively.

In Uruguay he is with captain Panagiotis Tsakos. The Tsakou family is the most important business name in the Latin American country and enjoys respect and appreciation for 10 years since it also offers social work.

In Montevideo, Captain Panagiotis has created the shipyard Tsakos Industrias Navales.

Also, the Uruguayan Foundation “Maria Tsakos” was recognized by the decision of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs from April 6, 2021 as “Department of Greek Language” (TEG). With this recognition, the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation is established as a provider of Greek-language education in Uruguay.

Until today, the work of the Foundation, which has been carried out for about 4 decades in this core of small Greece based in Montevideo, in terms of the dissemination of ancient Greek culture and the teaching of the Greek language, has received great recognition from institutions and governments. Since its establishment, approximately 4,000 students, philhellenic Uruguayans, have been taught free courses in modern Greek language, philosophy, literature, poetry, traditional dances, singing and Greek cooking.

As often mentioned by Capt. Panagiotis N. Tsakos “…Uruguayans are synonymous with Greek lovers, and the establishment in 1978 of the Maria Tsakos Foundation is a small gift of this love”.
The idea of establishing the Tsakos Foundation was born in the mid-1970s, when Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos visited Montevideo, Uruguay for business purposes. His contact with the Uruguayans revealed to him a people with a special culture, a people – lovers of the ancient Greek spirit. As a return, he decided to set up the Foundation, with the aim of passing on the language, culture, philosophy and traditions of Greece to the philhellen Uruguayans.
