Lip Forensics and the Forgotten Art of the Video Clip

--

And now for something completely “Different”.

The presentation of their new project Lip Forensics begins with a touch of Monty Python and informs us about their new music video. It’s for the piece “Different”in the vocalizations n Irini Skylakakisand is the closing of the curtain for the promotion of their debut album Apophenia which was released last year by Veego Records and established them as one of the most important groups in the alternative scene. Albums that they supported with many live shows, always dressed in their characteristic uniforms, sometimes as the main act and sometimes opening for acts such as Prodigy, Primal Scream, Red Axes, Jon Hopkins, 2 Many DJs but also Konstantinos Vita, Yiannis Angelakas and Pavlos Pavlidis..

The duo measures 1 LP + 1 EP, but has been active for over 5 years, and its members Zade and Echelon only newbies are not in the trick. With a long stint in groups such as Zebra Tracks and Berlin Brides the former, a member of Palyrria in the past the latter who also has solo releases under his belt and has sat countless times behind the console at (his) The Cave studio, where many records of the “scene” have taken shape in recent years.

Just a minute though. Video clip; Is it still a thing? “Video clips have ceased to play an important role in music for many years. Essentially, even before the advent of social media, they had already lost their power, with the most typical example being the downfall of MTV at the beginning of the new millennium.” they admit. But, there is one thing that no one can dispute. “THE but the combination of image and sound is a very powerful tool in the hands of artists. A tool that allows you to express yourself multidimensionally and in greater depth than with each of them separately. This is essentially what we were interested in. To create a new dimension in our music and to express thoughts and feelings in a different way, hoping that the message will be more complete”.

Let the video clip of “Different” drop, in which Ekelon has actually sat for the first time – let’s say – in the director’s chair…

But video clips are something else. A rather nostalgic piece of pop culture that may indeed today have a different meaning and approach, but it does not cease to be the place that gave birth to the great productions of the era when the discography was more prosperous than ever (80s, Michael Jackson, Madonna) and trained names that later moved on to different scales of Hollywood (from David Fincher to Spike Jonze). Maybe they even became part of the collective pop aesthetic, maybe you too had tapes filled with hours of material from MTV?

Lip Forensics however had and were ready to play the game…

– The first video clip you remember?
It’s not exactly a video clip but I remember (s.s. says Ekelon) to see the historic concert of Pink Floyd in Pompeii on the semi-illegal at the time channel Seven X. Due to the lack of a regular schedule, it was put on at odd hours and usually on my way home from school I sat and watched it until the end.

– Is there a video clip that changed your initial opinion of the song?
Generally this is probably not the case. A good song is good with or without an image. However, the opposite often happens. Because no matter how we do it, the image creates impressions and at the same time more or less distracts you from what is happening in the music.

– A Greek video clip that you will never forget?

The video also has a landmark character for Lip Forensics. It closes the album circle and “allows” them to move on. “The first full length album is a milestone in the course of any format. To us even more so, as we’ve been very active touring for a while, with only one EP in our quiver. We had to verify high expectations, with the fear of breaking the hype that we had literally built with a lot of sweat during the concerts. The disc was framed by the love of Veego Records, released in a very beautiful edition with graphics by Theodosias Margaris. With Different’s clip, a circle closes, and of course, because it is a circle, it closes with its beginning. With the promotion of the album’s main single, its visualization and the release of the “Different” remix by George Nikas”.

So what’s next? “There are already several completed compositions, more are being added, we approach the process with a creative curiosity and want to see where it will lead us. From the first samples, it seems that we will probably dance…Concert-wise, we will be traditionally active in the summer with the first stop on May 18 at Musikorama, which will be held in Santaroza square by the group of needless – &beyond’.
