“Attikon” professor on the Kallianou case: Admission to the ICU would be impermissible discriminatory treatment

Any admission of the patient to the ICU would be impermissible discriminatory treatment, says the professor of Vascular Surgery of “Attikon” in his statement through his lawyers regarding the case of Yiannis Kallianos.

“The admission to M.E.Th. non-intubated patient, who did not meet the medical conditions and at the same time it was a relative of a Member of Parliamentwould constitute impermissible discrimination“, refers precisely to the professor’s statement, which was made through his lawyers, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos and Yiannis Paparistides. The specific professor is publicly accused by ND Member of Parliament Yiannis Kallianos, of assuring that his 78-year-old father Dimitris Kallianos, who was hospitalized at “Attikon”, “is doing great” and does not need “admission to the ICU”.

“The doctors tried to deal with the multiple health problems that the deceased had, as required by their medical duty,” the announcement states, where it is also pointed out that “the complexity of the deceased’s health problems required the cooperation of a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a nephrologist, an infectious disease specialist and intensivist. The scientific opinion of all the above was that the possible intubation of the patient, without an absolute indication, would constitute medical malpracticeas its extubation would be practically impossible.”

The full statement from the Vascular Surgery Professor’s lawyers:

Our principal I.K., Professor of Vascular Surgery, expresses his sincere regret for the death of Dimitrios Kallianos.

All the doctors tried to deal with the multiple health problems that the deceased had, as their medical duty dictates and as they work for all patients without exception. The complexity of the deceased’s health problems required the collaboration of a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a nephrologist, an infectious disease specialist and an intensivist.

The scientific opinion of all of the above was that any intubation of the patient, without an absolute indication, would constitute an incorrect medical procedure, as extubation would be practically impossible. The admission of patients to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is governed by strict medical rules, which apply to all people, and the relevant decision is made by all attending physicians.

Admission to M.E.Th. of a non-intubated patient, who did not meet the medical conditions and at the same time was a relative of a Member of Parliament, would constitute impermissible discriminatory treatment.

During April 23, the patient worsened and it was decided to admit him to the ICU. at 18.30, after his intubation preceded it. Unfortunately, his very poor health did not allow him to avoid the fatal accident.
