53-year-old Frank Tyson from Ohio passed out in handcuffs, shortly after being tackled by a police officer, who pinned him to the ground. He was saying “I can’t breathe”.

New incident police brutality, similar to the one that cost him his life george floyd, took place in Ohio, USA, last Thursday, April 18.

Specifically, according to video which was made public on Thursday night (4/25) by the Canton Police Department of this particular state, the exact circumstances of the 53-year-old’s death, who while pinned to the ground by a policeman, handcuffed and hands behind his back, shouted “I can’t swim”. Until it finally cooled down.

As it conveys the NBCFrank Tyson, as the 53-year-old was called, seems to lies still on the floor for more than five minutes, before the police officers checked his pulse and proceeded, a few minutes later, to rescue him (CPR).

What happened

Initially the local police forces were alerted to one car that hit a power pole. When they arrived at the scene of the accident they saw an abandoned vehicle, with the driver’s door open and the airbag deployed.

At that moment, a man in a white van, passing by, told the officers that the person responsible for the present accident was at Amvets bar at the end of the road. The officers went to the bar and as they entered a woman yelled for Tyson to be removed. When the officers approached him, he threw down a stool, telling them to “call the sheriff.”

Then the police officers headed towards him and they tried to arrest him.

“They’re trying to kill me” Tyson said, insisting on yelling at them to “call the sheriff”, which he repeated several times. Then, the two police officers threw him to the ground and – as can be heard in the video – someone said “they will spray you” while another person is heard saying “don’t spray him”.

When they passed handcuffs to Tyson, one of the officers put his knee near the 53-year-old’s neckwith him repeating “I can’t breathe”, i.e. “I can’t breathe”.

The police officer holding Tyson captive on the ground continued to stomp on him while the other told him “to calm down and stop fighting”. “I can’t breathe, you’re on my neck” Tyson is heard again.

As NBC reports, the police officer seems to have held the 53-year-old in this position – which is very reminiscent of the way George Floyd was murdered – for about 30 seconds. When he removed his knee from Tyson’s body, he again said he “can’t breathe” to which the officer replied dismissively, “You are fine. Shut up”.

As can be seen in the video, when Tyson stops moving, a police officer searches his wallet and speaks to bystanders. Tyson appears to be motionless on the floor for over 5 minutes, while the policeman talks to the bar patrons. At one point he even joked, telling someone “I’ve always wanted to get into a bar fight. I don’t know if that counts.”

When one of the officers returns to the shot, he asks if Tyson has calmed down and if he is breathing. The policeman checks his pulse, they realize he is not breathing and perform CPR to revive him. Without, however, the 53-year-old responding.

An investigation into the death of the 53-year-old is underway

CPR and several doses of Narcan were administered before Canton Fire Department medics arrived, the news release said. Tyson was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m.

“The cause of his death is pending”, said Harry Campbell, chief investigator for the Stark County Coroner’s Office. In addition to the officer’s dashcam video, police also released recordings of two 911 calls.

The police department said in a statement that it “immediately contacted” the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct an independent investigation. Without naming Tyson, the Bureau confirmed that his investigation into a “fatal fatal incident involving a police officer” is active and ongoing.

Police Chief John Gabbard expressed his “deepest condolences” to Tyson’s family. “Based on experience, I’m sure the BCI will conduct a very thorough examination,” he said.

The two officers involved in Tyson’s arrest, Schoenegge and Burch, who joined the department in 2022 and serve in the traffic bureau, were placed on administrative leave with pay, pending an investigation, which is conducted under department policy.
