Corfu: They ransacked houses and were arrested while trying to leave the island

While they were trying to leave Corfu by boat, five people were arrested, including a minor, who, according to the police, were raiding houses on the island, grabbing jewelry and other valuable items.

The five citizens, aged 16 to 54, were spotted and arrested on Wednesday afternoon (24/4) by police officers of the Security Sub-Directorate, outside the port of Corfu, while they were riding in an IX truck owned by the 54-year-old and trying to escape the island by boat . They are now facing serious charges. A felony case was filed against four of the above arrested persons for aggravated theft, while a co-accused for complicity in the same crime is another 54-year-old citizen, the father of two of the perpetrators.

According to the police, the four nationals, in the last period of time, had united with the purpose of committing thefts, with stolen gold and jewelry. In particular, their action has allegedly been identified in four cases of successive house burglaries, in areas of North Corfu. Their “raid” took place on Monday (22/4) and Tuesday (23/4) and they managed to grab gold and jewelry of great monetary value.

During the police investigations, silver bars were found and seized, as well as a large amount of gold and jewelry, the value of which is estimated to exceed 26,000 euros, while part of the stolen goods was identified by their owners and, as it was established, concerns two more cases of burglaries , in the same area of ​​the island, which took place in May 2022 and December 2023.

Also, 5 mobile phones and two cars were seized as means of facilitating the commission of criminal acts. Those arrested were taken to the misdemeanor prosecutor of Corfu and after criminal prosecution was instituted against them, they were referred to the investigator.
