Corfu: Meetings of the Governor of the Ionian Islands with the Ministers of Citizen Protection and Tourism

Security at the ports and airports of the Ionian Islands, especially during the summer season, but also issues concerning the “heavy industry” of the Ionian Islands, Tourism, were at the center of the contacts that the Regional Governor, Giannis Trepeklis, hadin Athens with the competent Ministers.

The Governor of the Ionian Islands met with the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, in which raised the key issue of strengthening security at the entry gates of the Ionian Islands, i.e. at airports and ports. Mr. Chrysochoidis pledged that there will be a strengthening of the police force in the Ionian islands, especially in the largest of them, such as Zakynthos and Corfu.

The Minister of Citizen Protection underlined that he will visit the Ionian Islands in the near future, starting with Corfu, while at the same time discussed with the Governor of the Ionian Islands the issue of the construction of a new modern and safe prison in Corfu, for which Mr. Trepeklis pointed out that the Region has a specific space at its disposal in the northern complex of the island, who meets the necessary conditions of the Ministry for the construction of new prisons.

The Regional Governor also had a technical meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni and officials of the Ministry. A series of issues that concern the Ionian Islands in the field of Tourism were discussed, while the Minister of Tourism committed to close cooperation with the Region of the Ionian Islands regarding the new strategic planning for Tourism.

The Prefect of the Ionian Islands asked Ms. Kefalogianni to visit Corfu as soon as possible in order to convene a broad meeting with the Local Government, tourism operators, the Hoteliers’ Association, the Federation of Tourist Accommodations, as well as representatives of tourism workers, a request which the Minister of Tourism accepted .

Mr. Trepeklis, in his capacity as the Head of Tourism of the Union of Regions of Greece (ENPE), also participated in the meeting of the Insular Regions Subcommittee of the Special Standing Committee of Regions of the Parliament, where the issue of the transition of the islands to the “green era” and in the utilization of alternative forms of energy. He pointed out that the Ionian Islands are characterized by particularities different from those of the Aegean islands and for this reason he requested a special, thematic, meeting for the Region of the Ionian Islands, a request which was unanimously accepted by the Special Standing Committee on Regions of the Parliament.
