At the meeting, which aimed to communicate and promote innovative technologies and solutions in waste management by Greek Scientists and Academics and representatives of Local Government, in order to strengthen additionally and on a stronger basis the action of Greek scientists, educational institutions, academics and organizations in America and worldwide, the Municipality of North Corfu was represented by the deputy mayor of Circular Economy Spyridoula Kokkali and the president of the Municipal Council of North Corfu Panagiotis Papadatos.

As stated in the relevant press release issued by the Municipality:The delegation of the Municipality of North Corfu gained the interest of the participants for its achievements in the circular economy, which were achieved in a difficult period.

In fact, a special impression was made by the presentation – speech of the vice-mayor Ms. Kokkalis on the reality of waste management in Corfu and in particular in the north of the island, drawing praise from the participating Greek and foreign graduate students Columbia and delegates who participated.

It is also worth noting that both Ms. Kokkali and Mr. Papadatos were invited to give two interviews to the Greek expatriate media in New York, the National Herald and the Anamnisis newspaper, while the meetings held with members of her associations were also important. of Greek and Corfu expatriates, after the initiative of the members of the clubs themselves, while they were welcomed by the Greek ambassador in New York, Mr. Konstantinos Konstantinou, at the Greek Consulate.

Note that the conference held at Columbia University, New York on Monday, was organized by the National Technical University in collaboration with Columbia University, New York and with Art Vibes Productions and GECS – Global Educational and Cultural Services and under the auspices of General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the EOT, the Region of Attica, the Municipality of Athens, the Consulate of Greece in New York, as well as the support of the Archdiocese of New York and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Within these frameworks, visits followed to waste management and treatment units with an emphasis on the energy recovery of urban solid waste and the application of effective practices and modern technologies with the aim of sustainable development and the promotion of the circular economy.

The most important visit was to the MRS Material Recovery Facility, which employs 80 people in total and works 24 hours 6 days a week.

Its performance is the collection of 1000 tons of recyclable materials per day from all over New York and it was founded in 2014, that is, the technology it uses is already 10 years old, which strengthens the argument of the Municipality of North Corfu for the creation of a MEBA (Biowaste Treatment Unit), which is also the next modern step and even in New York the brown bin and bio-waste collection has only recently been activated.

The particular factory collects, separates and sells materials while also having an educational site where it accepts schools, with recycling in the state based on the green bin for paper and cardboard and the blue one for metal, plastic and glass, with the waste collected being very ” dirty”, although the residue is around 10%, unlike what happens in Corfu where the residue even exceeds 60%.

Of course, it must be emphasized that the separation of materials is done mechanically according to the weight of the materials and with optical fibers for the separation of plastics, making it a very modern and capable KDAU.

In conclusion, the strategy followed by the Municipality of North Corfu – headed by the Mayor of North Corfu and vice-president of the Ionian Islands FODSA Georgios Mahimari – is in accordance with European data (sorting at the source, etc.) in the matter of integrated management it worked extremely efficiently in the desired direction and especially in the best environmental result with the least cost. The next step of integrated bio-waste management is the creation of the MEBA (Bio-Waste Processing Unit) of the Municipality of North Corfu.”
