With its announcement, the Union of Pensioners IKA N. Heraklion makes a massive call to the world to attend the strike mobilization on Wednesday, May 1, at 10 am in Eleftherias Square.
The announcement: “The Union of Pensioners IKA N. Heraklion invites all pensioners and workers to participate en masse and decisively in the strike rally, organized by labor unions and other mass organizations on Wednesday May 1st at 10 am in Eleftherias Square.
The first of May is a day symbol for the World working class and struggle against exploitation. It is a day of struggle and assertion, for better working conditions, for increases in salaries and pensions, but also for the disengagement of the country from imperialist plans at a time when the risks for the people are escalating.
More than a century has passed since workers first demanded 8 hours and decent wages. And today we are faced with the directives of the European Union, and the corresponding anti-labor legislation that all governments have passed, to abolish the 8-hour shift, to make the working time flexible, to establish the 13-hour work, the 6-day and the 7-day work.
The first of May 2024 will find the pensioners, and their families, in the worst situation of the last 10 years. The united attack of the parties, and the governments of the EU, capital, has brought the pensioners, in a very difficult situation. The pensions are not sufficient even to cover the basic needs even though for 10 years the wealth of this country was made by their hands.
As competitively, with pride and dignity we faced the attack against us, we defended our lives and our rights, so we will continue, and we claim the stolen gift of Easter, the retroactives, the protection of our pensions from the unbearable accuracy, the strengthening of public health.
138 years from the heroic May 1, 1886 in Chicago to May 1936 in Thessaloniki and May Day 1944 with the heroic sacrifice of 200 fighters in Kaisariani, we continue the fight to abolish the exploitation of man by man for a just and peaceful world” .
