US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed his concerns about Beijing’s support for Moscow during his meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi today, a US official said.
Blinken “discussed concerns regarding the People’s Republic of China’s support of the Russian defense industrial base,” as well as Taiwan, the South China Sea and the Middle East, said Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman.
For his part, Wang stressed to Blinken that China and the US have a choice between stability or deterioration of their relations. “It will be up to China and the United States to maintain the right direction to move forward with stability or return to a downward spiral. This is a major question before our two countries and tests our sincerity and ability,” Wang said, noting, however, that relations are “beginning to stabilize.”
“Should our two sides lead international cooperation against global issues and achieve win-win for all? Or engage in rivalry and confrontation—or even slide into conflict, which would be painful for everyone?” the Chinese diplomat added.
“I hope we can make some progress on the issues that our Presidents have agreed that we need to work together on, but also clarify our differences, our intentions and make it very clear to each other where we stand,” he said for his part. Blinken.
Officials in Beijing and Washington also said Blinken would be received by Chinese President Xi Jinping today.
The announcement was made by Chinese Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong, who met with Blinken. The information was later confirmed by the State Department.
