  • The Canadian city of Toronto is the worst city for your skin (1.45), followed by the European cities of Bratislava (2.55) and Athens (2.64)

On TikTok, skintok has amassed 13.4 billion views as people around the world search for skin care tips and tricks. But with environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure proven to affect skin health, what are the worst cities for your skin, worldwide?

To shed light on the effects of environmental factors on skin health, new research from Compare the Market AU analyzed factors such as UV index, pollution levels and duration of sunshine to reveal the worst cities for skin your.

The world’s 10 worst cities for skin health were revealed as follows:

Ontario’s capital, Toronto, ranks as the worst city for skin health with a score of just 1.45 out of 6. As an urban area, it often faces smog and particulate matter, with the highest levels of PM 10, PM 2.5 and NO2 among the analyzed countries. High pollution can contribute to clogged pores and inflammation of the skin and ultimately increase the aging process.

The European cities Bratislava (2.55) and Athens (2.64) are ranked second and third on the list respectively. As the capitals of their respective countries, both have a heavy influx of traffic and tourists, meaning that there is likely to be a higher level of air pollution than in most areas. Bratislava has a high level of O3, while Athens has a high concentration of PM 2.5 and PM10.

Two US cities made the top ten, including Phoenix (2.67) and New York (2.79) – despite the fact that both cities differ in terms of climate. Phoenix had the most hours of sunshine with an average of 9.33 hours of the countries analyzed – so considering the link between sun exposure and skin damage it is important for residents and visitors to use a high SPF sunscreen protection. Due to the high population density in New York, it is not surprising that the city has a relatively high concentration of air pollutants that contribute to skin problems.

When it comes to cities that are best for your skin, Reykjavik in Iceland took the top spot with a score of 5.17. This is probably due to the high air quality of the city, which is surrounded by a pristine natural environment, including glaciers and geothermal areas, which contribute to clean and fresh air. The Scandinavian cities of Oslo (5.01) and Stockholm (4.85) also rank in the top three.

Commenting on the research, Compare the Market AU’s Head of Health Insurance, Lana Hambilton, said: “Taking care of your skin isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about prioritizing your health. Your skin serves as a protective barrier, protecting you from external factors such as the sun and air pollutants. By caring for it, you support its vital role in maintaining overall health and well-being.”

“According to our research, where we live can have an impact on skin health,” says Ms Hambilton. “To maintain healthy skin, it’s important to schedule regular skin exams by a professional. The right health insurance policy can pay a benefit for skin checks and some health funds even pay a benefit for Cancer Council UV products, including sunscreen, hats and sunglasses, helping you adopt a preventative approach to skin care”.
