We took our suitcases and started village hopping in Fthiotida, meeting beautiful villages that should be on your travel radar.

As you have probably understood, we are always on the ramparts for excursions, short trips and village-hopping in every Greek corner. So now, we packed a few things into a small suitcase and started towards Fthiotida with the aim of finding the 5 most beautiful villages in the area. Well, we found them and present them to you in a mini travel list so that the next time you find yourself in the vicinity of Lamia you will know and act accordingly.

Pauliani

It is located on the outskirts of the Oitis National Forest and around it meet the Vardousia with Oiti and Giona, creating a wonderful mountain scenery, which you will especially appreciate if you are also a fan of hiking. The village is beautiful with picturesque stone-built houses and chimneys, which seem to have sprung from a naturalistic painting, which deifies mother nature.

The reputation of the natural Recreation Park at the sources of Asopos justifiably exceeds its name, while the buzz – and hashtags – on social media, especially on Instagram and TikTok, are falling at the rate of a machine gun.

Visitors are dazzled by the beauty of the Park’s enchanting path, in which the colors of the centuries-old trees and green waters reflect, further beautifying the natural landscape.

Sublime

When you arrive at Ypati, you will be enchanted by its natural beauty, its Byzantine Churches, its fountains, its running waters, its waterfalls. Your eye gets lost in the twisted paths, where witches and fairies invite you, since every corner is embraced by a myth or a popular legend that is forever linked to its great history.

The ravine of Agia Kyriaki is a landscape unsurpassed in beauty and grace. Accordingly, in the sightseeing list of the most interesting sights, its waterfall stands out, with the mill of the Matsouka family, a unique landscape in the whole of Fthiotida.

The Church of Agios Georgios impresses not only the faithful but also the visitors of the area, as well as the pride of the area the Kakoianneio Astroschool – it is a center of education, research and dissemination of the science of Astronomy for students and anyone interested – which should not be missed missing from your visit list just like the Byzantine Museum of Ypati.

Special mention must be made of the taverns of the village, especially the Hani of Ziakas, but also the thermal baths which, thanks to their thermal springs, are filled with people almost all year round. You can stay at Ermis in Loutra Ypatis with the cost of a double room at €50 per night, including breakfast.

We now go to the mountainous Fthiotida to present you a beautiful little village that is drowned in greenery. Dibri with its particularly wild natural beauty, with its rocky terrains and gorges, overlooks the valley of Sperchios, Lamia and the surrounding mountains, Kallidromos, Parnassos, Giona, Oiti, Oxia and Velouhi, behind which the sun at summer sunset. Stone-built houses, all of them, give their own colorful note to the green that dominates and covers the whole area as far as your eye can see.

Hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by the paths and routes they will encounter around the village. It is necessary to stop at the Folklore Museum of the village, which reveals many aspects of its history, while it is worth underlining that the cultural association of the Divriotians is one of the most active in all of Fthiotida, organizing many events and actions in Divri.

Mavrilo is a mountain village at an altitude of 920 meters which is located on the slopes of Velouhi and is a wonderful hidden travel secret that is worth discovering the next time you are in the vicinity of Lamia or Karpenisi (since it is about 45 minutes from there) .

It is an idyllic green brown village in the heart of Roumeli, which will delight everyone who is looking for a break from the smoky and bustling metropolis. The preserved gunpowder mill of the village is at the top of the sightseeing list, as is the church of Agios Dimitrios, which has stood tall since 1728. Walking around the village, you will come across plenty of forest paths worth walking, arched bridges, springs and beautiful sunsets.

Agia Marina Stylidas

Between Stylida and Lamia you will find a small fishing village, which in the past decades was bustling with life since the Lamiates enjoyed their baths on the beach in the area. Agia Marina may not live the glories of the past, however it retains its subtle charm and its wild beauty not only in the summer but also in the winter season. Among the most important attractions of Agia Marina are the old railway station and the bridge for transshipment of ores from the mines of Domokos to cargo ships.

When you find yourself on its beach, you will be impressed by the almost abandoned little bridge that reaches the middle of the sea, delighting the visitors of the area. On the beach there are excellent fish taverns, with the one of Karanikas standing out, while the small marina with the boats will surely delight your soul, as the daylight falls and we go for the afternoon.
