Municipality of South Kynouria: The program of Easter events in Leonidio and Tyros

Easter in the Municipality of South Kynouria is celebrated with the religious reverence and devotion required for such an important religious event. The sanctity of the days combined with the respect for tradition and customs constitute a unique experience for every attendee. Our Municipality is well known for the unique events that take place. In Leonidio, Tyros and the rest of the villages, the spectacles of the resurrection days are a pole of attraction for Greek and foreign visitors. The local communities are decorated with lanterns, lanterns and balloons of various sizes which are the identity of Easter in South Kynouria.

22:00 Conclusion and meeting of the Epitaphs in Hero Square where a joint prayer will be sung under the leadership of the Holy Clergy, accompanied by the Municipal Philharmonic and the Chanters. The alleys of Leonidio are flooded with smells emerging from the countless orange lanterns, made with love by volunteers.

Great Saturday

11:00 “The message of the Balloon” in the forecourt of the Culture Factory. Young and old send messages of peace and love to the sky. Constructions of various sizes express people’s thoughts and the sky is filled with symbolic balloons.

23:00 Start of the Resurrection Procession. The bells of the churches invite the world and thousands of visitors head towards the 5 parishes of Leonidio.
A few minutes before midnight the priests go to the forecourts of the Holy Temples and exactly at 12:00 midnight Christ is Risen is sung, the bells ring joyfully, countless balloons light up the sky and all eyes are turned towards him. According to tradition, the weather stands tall in whatever weather conditions prevail, leading the balloons to the sea.

Easter Sunday

11:00 The Municipality of South Kynouria honors the traditions of the place and invites everyone to celebrate the Greek Easter in the garden of the old town hall to taste the traditional obelia, to enjoy traditional cookies, red eggs and wine.

19:30 Celebration of Love in Hero Square. Gospel reading in the Tsakonian dialect as well.
The people will be entertained by live traditional music. Various dances will follow from the Dance Group of the Municipality of South Kynouria, always closing with the Tsakonian dance and at the same time there will be the traditional flying of balloons.

Meeting of the Epitaphs on the coastal road where a common prayer will be chanted under the leadership of the Holy Clergy and the Chanters. In the sea there are the boats that participate in the procession and the sea is filled with hundreds of improvised lanterns.

At the moment of the Resurrection, the sky is filled with hundreds of fireworks, followed by the burning of Judas in the sea on a special raft.

Easter Sunday
19:00 Service of love in the church of Agia Marina. Gospel reading in the Tsakonian dialect as well.
People will be entertained with live traditional music and treats. Various dances from the Cultural Association of Tire will follow. Locals and visitors will taste the traditional ovelia, red eggs, traditional diples and wine.

Easter Monday
On Easter Monday we will celebrate in the churches of Agios Georgios of our Municipality.

Easter Wednesday
19:30 On Easter Wednesday, the unveiling of the bust of Nikolaos Karamanos will take place in Hero’s Square.

ATTENTION: From Holy Monday until Resurrection, it is forbidden to raise balloons, throw sparklers, firecrackers and all kinds of fireworks.
