The Independent Union Initiative calls for the immediate reopening of the Public KTEOs

--

The regional councilor Stergios Iliopoulos suggested to the special Regional Accountability Council the immediate re-operation of the Public KTEO (DKTEO) of the Region. According to him, the decision to give the DKTEO of Orestiada to a private person is made purely to increase the profits of private individuals and businesses. He claimed that in Greece only 1% of the vehicles that pass KTEO go out of service, in contrast to European countries where the percentage reaches up to 25%.

Referring to the decision for this year to be dedicated to road safety, as an Independent Union Initiative they request the revocation of the decision and the reopening of the DKTEO of Orestiada, Alexandroupolis, Kavala and Komotini. He claimed that the DKTEO of Drama generates 180,000 per year, while the equivalent of Xanthi started operating towards the end of the previous administration and has already started to have a good activity. At the same time, he asked for an intervention to legislate a reduction in the cost of the technical inspection and a free inspection for the unemployed and low-paid and low-pensioners, a free inspection for state cars and the organization of informative activities on the importance of road safety.

The non-operation is in favor of the Region
In response, the regional governor emphasized that the main reason for the non-operation of the DKTEOs is the lack of staff, evident from the lack of staff in other services as well. He informed that at least a DKTEO must have a minimum of 3 personnel: supervisor, technical director, certified engineer, one controller per operating line, secretary and cashier, gate clerk. All must have attended a special training program and passed relevant exams.

He claimed that in the next 10-year planning of the region, there is no possibility of reopening the Orestiada DKTEO. He stated, however, that it is necessary to have a KTEO serving heavy vehicles in Northern Evros since all are located in Alexandroupolis. At the same time, he informed that the revenues of the DKTEO all go to the competent ministry, despite the fact that the region bears all the operational costs of the structures.

For these reasons, the regional governor emphasized that the decision of the Region is not at the expense of the citizens but serves their needs. At the same time, there is a possibility that the DKTEO structure will be given to a private person who will rent it.

The concession prices should be low
The regional councilor Kostas Kourtidis said that the problem arising from the non-operation of the DKTEOs is that the private ones raise the prices. Accordingly, on behalf of his faction, New Regional Renaissance, he requested that the regional governor commit that if a private individual takes over the Orestiada DKTEO, the private person will offer checks at low prices.

Dionysis Kladis of the People’s Rally claimed that the main issue that arises is that the safety of vehicles is not ensured by the private KTEOs since the question of profit comes into the middle. “I don’t have to say it, the statistics show it,” claimed the regional councilor and referred to the statistics previously mentioned by Mr. Iliopoulos.
