The case of the Center-Left the day after the European elections will have many suitors.
Regardless of the results, the processes will be spread over two fields. Inside with the initiatives to be taken, even as a painful necessity. Abroad with the interest already shown by the progressive political Euro-groups. Eurosocialists and the Left.
A central figure, both because of his route and because of the mobility he demonstrates, is Alexis Tsipras. With his Institute in L. Amalias as a lion, the former prime minister seems not to be satisfied with just a rebranding of his own name. He is interested in the whole new course of Europe, its policies, the correlation outside and in Greece, how the new dynamic of the extreme right will develop.
Win – win presence
The basic starting point for Tsipras’ new course is his new stance on internal affairs. His presence, for example, at the announcement of the SYRIZA-PS European ballot by Stefanos Kasselakis and the rewarming of relations with the space he co-founded anyway was a facet of his new strategy.
The most skeptical observer would say that Tsipras’ presence was a win-win. If Kasselakis does well on June 9, no one will be able to blame the former Prime Minister for not being there. If it doesn’t go well, also, no one will be able to attribute to Tsipras some kind of “undermining”.
The reading of a part of the system that on the occasion of the departure of executives who today have built the New Left – or the adventurous conference in the taekwondo field, the party was dissolved, was wrong.
They were not two acts of dissolution of the party. They were two acts of re-establishment with the characteristics of its new leader. SYRIZA remains the main pole in the center-left today and according to polls. And this is not underestimated by its experienced former president.
This is also where the old pool of SYRIZA gathers – with the losses of 2023 – and the new audiences that Kasselakis is trying to reach.
Of course, Tsipras will not be satisfied as he seems to be looking inward. His presence outside, in speeches, e.g. at an event of the Institute of Social Democrats EuroJam2024 in Berlin, the channels he maintains with former and current leaders, but also with actors in Greek political life will not allow many to consider him a retired politician, but a person on the move for the next day of the political system.
