Her arrest of legendary chess player Garry Kasparov, with accusations about the constitution of terrorism organization and espionage, ordered a Russian court in his absence.

The municipal court of Syktyvkar in Russia’s northwestern Komi region announced that it issued arrest warrant for the grandmaster together with the former member of the Russian parliament Gennady Gudkov, according to Mirror.

Ivan Tyutrin, co-founder of the organization Free Russia Forum – which has been defined as “undesirable in the country” – and former activist Yevgenia Chirikova are facing similar charges to the world champion.

The charges against Kasparov

All of them were accused of forming a terrorist organization, according to the court announcement, but none of them were taken into custodysince the trial was held in their absence.

“The court imposed restrictive measures on Garry Kasparov, Gennady Gudkov, Yevgenia Chirikova and Ivan Tyutrin, who are accused of formation and management of a terrorist organizationfinancing of terrorist activity and its public justification”.

For his part, the top chess player commented on the charges and the verdict against him via Twitter“Our ‘terrorist organization’ Free Russia Forum defends democracy, human rights, calls for an end to Russia’s war with Ukraine and stands against Putin’s mafia state.”

And he added emphatically: “Thanks to the regime for advertising which made us and we look forward its officials to be tried not in absentia, but present in a free Russia, or even in The Hague”.
