It is hard to realize that under the spot that for years hosted the old airport of Athens, in Elliniko, more than 300 bombs from the Second World War have been found.

The revelation about the hundreds of bombs was made by the mayor of Ellinikos Argyroupoli himself, Yiannis Konstantatos, who, in the context of information on the controlled explosions taking place at the site of the old airport, was informed that hundreds of bombs had been found during the works.

“The tragedy of the case is that the 314 bombs, which the Germans had stored, were 2 meters directly below the former facilities of the Pontian Sourmen Union, our kindergartens and sports facilities, which were located inside the former airport as well as next to Olympic Facilities ! In places where thousands of people entered every day!” said the Mayor of Hellinikon Argyroupoli Yiannis Constantatos.

He added: “Thank God, there was never any harm or explosion, while it is truly amazing how an entire Airport and dozens of Municipal and CAA facilities were operating in this minefield. We, as a Municipality, had our residents die in the war, mainly from Allied bombings, and that is why when I was elected Mayor, one of the first projects I did, out of respect for their memory, was the relevant monument in the Church of Agia Paraskevi. But no one could have imagined this!”

Finally, he thanked TENX: “A big thank you to the Heroes of TENX, who even now, because of the investment, are cleaning up the area next to our houses, 80 years later. The meeting was held in order to have close cooperation in communication with our residents, who are upset with every controlled explosion”.
