While Greece has paid dearly, with money it does not have left over, for weapons for its defense, because it has specific threats, it is at the same time “large” to distribute them to others. Already Ukraine has taken a large number of armored personnel carriers, ammunition, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, etc. Many of these we did not learn from the responsible Greek government, but from foreign publications and announcements from the Ukrainian government.
At the same time, it is known that allied countries are pushing for more weapons in Ukraine and especially for anti-aircraft systems, such as the S-300 that are defended by Crete on the southern and eastern borders of the country.

Now it’s the turn of the anti-aircraft Crotale, which France is requesting from Greece to strengthen its air defense ahead of the Olympic Games. It sounds like a bad joke because the Crotales are French made (Thales). France also gives weapons to Ukraine and now understands that it has gaps in its own defense.
The request for the transfer of an array of Crotale short-range mobile anti-aircraft systems of the Air Force, according to a report by “Kathimerini”, was officially submitted to Athens by the French authorities, on the grounds of its use for the period of the Paris Olympic Games . Paris intends to provide anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine and is seeking allied assistance to ensure air defense of critical infrastructure inside the Games capital.
The Crotale system has launchers with a range of 11-20 km and a maximum engagement height of 6 km. They can protect France’s critical infrastructure. The French proposal, although not directly linked to Ukraine, is clearly yet another very indirect suggestion to Athens to “unlock” part of its anti-aircraft defense, in the general European effort to strengthen Kiev.
According to the same report of “Kathimerini” the French pressures are much more elegant than those coming from Berlin. German pressure is characterized by a lack of tact by German diplomats to “openly hostile”. The debate about the need to provide anti-aircraft systems from the allies, and Greece in particular, started the day after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has never stopped since. Tomorrow, in the form of a teleconference, the pressure is expected to be repeated, this time from the USA, in the planned teleconference for the strengthening of Ukraine (Ukraine Defense Contact Group).
