In a video published in the past few days, Yiannis Kallianos had mentioned the serious state of his father’s health, at the same time complaining about the way he was treated at the Attikon hospital.

The father of Yiannis Kallianos, whose condition the ND MP had mentioned in his posts on Facebook, passed away at the age of 78.

A Sworn Administrative Examination into the hospitalization conditions of the father of Yiannis Kallianos was ordered by the administration of the Attica Hospital.

“Following yesterday’s press release of the P.G.N. “ATTIKON” announces today 25/4/2024 the death of Dimitrios Kallianos and we express our deepest condolences to his family.

In order to investigate all the hospitalization conditions of the incident from the day of his admission until today, the Administration of the P.G.N. “ATTIKON” ordered the conduct of a Sworn Administrative Examination”.

In a video released in the past few days, Mr. Kallianos had mentioned the serious state of his father’s health, at the same time complaining about the way he was treated at the hospital.

After his post, Mr. Kallianos opened a dialogue with the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadiswho in his post on X after expressing his respect for the family’s pain, said that “ESY and its workers save thousands of people every day and they do it with knowledge, conscience, empathy, sensitivity and professionalism”.

“I respect a man who fights to help his father. This is respectful, touching and completely understandable and in this sense G. Kallianos who is my friend has my understanding” said the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis in an interview this morning (25/4) to SKY and added that there is also the side of the health system.

As the Minister of Health mentioned, Mr. Kallianos does not blame the NHS for a lack of doctors or for not finding a bed in the hospital, but for a wrong medical judgment. “As the minister of health, I am not involved in the judgment of the doctors”, he underlined and added that for a patient to enter an ICU, the treating doctor must register him on a platform and the transfer procedure to the nearest one must be followed.

“The first criterion is that the patient is intubated”, clarified Mr. Georgiadis, then emphasizing that in order for a patient to enter the ICU “there is no discrimination if you are an MP”.

It all started with the video posted by MP of New Democracy, Yiannis Kallianos, in which he described the health adventure of his father, Dimitris, leaving tips for his treatment in a specific public nursing institution.

Listening to the video, questions arise regarding the treatment of the patient and any indifference by the medical staff. However, both the management of the nursing institution and the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, taking responsibility for the incident, assured that a specific protocol that applies to every patient of the NHS was followed to the letter.

The family’s main objection, and cause of the tension captured in the video, was the 79-year-old’s stay outside ICU for days, with the well-known meteorologist implying that if he had entered the Intensive Care Unit earlier, his health might have improved.

In the video published by Yannis Kallianos, with tears in his eyes he accused the doctors of the hospital where his father had been hospitalized for days for not paying due attention to his care. In fact, he reported directly to the doctor who operated on him Dimitris Kalliano for the diabetic foot, as well as other doctors at the hospital, who claimed that the patient was doing well, according to what is reported in the video, while he suffered a seizure and was finally admitted to the ICU. “They will pay dearly for what they did to my father”he specifically said.

His first announcement Atticon Hospital:

“The patient underwent successful surgical treatment of the gangrene, while his complex pre-existing problems were evaluated and treated intensively during his hospitalization by all involved specialties (cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, infectious disease specialists). On 4/22 the patient reported subjective deterioration, with stable vital signs and condition tests (good communication, good gas exchange and spontaneous breathing, stable hemodynamic picture without support), a picture that did not meet the medical criteria for ICU admission. During 4/23, he presented signs of mild but worsening tissue hypoxia (good communication and gas exchange, but a mild increase in lactate which the previous day was completely normal), was evaluated by the ICU and it was decided to admit him to the Intensive Care Unit at 18.30. During transport preparation the patient had a convulsive episode and was intubated. He was transferred to the ICU where he remains intubated in critical condition, on mechanical support of organs and systems.

Covering cases requiring intensive care is a top priority of Attikon University Hospital and the National Health System. During the turbulent last five years all the intubated patients of PGN ‘Attikon’ were cared for in the ICU of our hospital.

It is clarified that the admission of patients to each ICU of the country is done with strict conditions and criteria and after they are registered on a centrally controlled platform of the EKAB, criteria which the specific patient did not meet until 23/4. Indicatively, it is mentioned that according to the data of the EKAB platform, no non-intubated pathological patient was included in the platform in the last month.

We understand the emotional burden, we sympathize with the human pain of the family and we are doing all we can for the best possible development of this serious and complex incident.”

Unfortunately, Dimitris Kallianos breathed his last today at the age of 79.
