The road tax comes with the month. The legislation will be filed within the next few days and the possibility of recovering the plates for those drivers who have filed them electronically will be given from May 1st so that, those who want, can also catch up with the Easter exit.
The process is done entirely electronically, while again this year there will be “caps” on the fees. That is, drivers will only pay the amount corresponding to the time they choose to drive their vehicle.
The following examples are typical:
1. Owner of a 2000 cc vehicle first manufactured in 2009, filed the plates to avoid the €690 fee. Now he will recover them for 7 months (May-December) and will pay 402.5 euros.
2. For a 2005 1400cc vehicle, the road tax is 255 euros. The driver will take back the plates for four months and pay 85 euros.
3. For vehicles with a date of first registration later than 2010 – which means that the registration fees are calculated based on the pollutants – and emissions of 180 grams, the annual fees are 441 euros, so for a seven-month registration, they correspond to 257 euros and for a 5-month registration, 183.75 euros.
What drivers should be aware of is not to drive their vehicle in a period for which they are not covered by the monthly fees. And this because the fine can reach up to 10,000 euros.
Up until this year, those who chose the month-to-month circulation fee regime actually received two months… a gift. And that’s because they could practically sell their vehicles in January and February without paying the next year’s fees. This was due to the extension given all these past years for the payment of road charges. To end this “gift”, the Ministry of Finance announces from now on that it will put an end to the regime of extensions in the payment of traffic fees.
In practice, the payment date will expire at the end of December. What will change will be the late payment penalty which will henceforth be tiered. Thus, for the first month of delay it will be a low amount in proportion to the annual traffic fees, for the second month it will be doubled and if February also passes, the fine will be equal to the traffic fees.
Regarding the level of traffic fees, decisions on whether there will be changes from 2025 will be made in the autumn, as at this time it is found that a… babel has been created. We have three groups of cars: those released before 2010 that pay taxes based on emissions, those released after 2010 that pay based on emissions and the more modern ones that are taxed based on the new emissions scale.
The possibility that the age and -mainly- the environmental impact of the vehicles play a more important role in the amount of traffic fees will be seriously considered as Greece has the oldest car fleet in Europe which means more charges in terms of pollutants.
